Feel like Robinson Crusoe for the day........
La Sagesse Beach has long been an area of cultural significance, of recreation and scenic beauty in St David.
This beach is white sand and fairly shallow water for part of the way out. The river joins the sea about one third of the way up La Sagesse Beach. There exists also, what is described by locals as a ‘fresh water lake’ and bird sanctuary. Many species of seabirds nest in this area.
Almost to the end of the beach and turn right, is Lance Pere Point, which is extremely tranquil – almost a holy atmosphere. Environmentalists said that is were so named because a priest drowned there sometime during the late 17th Century.
In the opposite direction is a hotel with restaurant facilities. Part of the physical structure was Lord Brownlow's Estate House. Lord Brownlow was Prince Edward’s (who abdicated the throne to marry an American woman) Equerry.
Lord Brownlow had bought the estate and closed it off to the people of St David and every one else by barring the access to the beach. Lord Brownlow was tried ‘in absentia’ under the almond tree which still exists, found guilty and sentence carried out; a removal of the barriers, allowing public access to the beach once more.
Come and enjoy your day off with us on La Sagesse Beach. A truly 'get away from it all' spot.
